Nathaniel Hawthorne once said, "Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you." How is this quote correct in terms of two characters in Scarlet Letter? You may choose any two characters to provide a response. Write a paragraph response. 1. Welcome back to a new school year! For your first blog, please respond to the following questions: 1. How does the cover of the romance (image shown here) exemplify the story of Hester? 2. Research the history behind this novel. Why do you think Harper Lee chose to publish this novel in 1960? What was she trying to teach America? Explain in 5 sentences. Due Thursday, March 9th 2017 at 10 pm.
In Unit 3, we will be reading Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman in detail. They were two major poets spanning during the time of the Civil War, and they followed the ideals of Emerson and Thoreau, by creating their own poetry without following the conventions of the period. Please research one of these poets, and write down three things you learned about them. Due Thursday, 1/26/17, by 10 pm.
Now that you have finished reading the two writers, Emerson and Thoreau, do you think their ideas are plausible today? Focus mainly on Thoreau. Can we truly simplify the way he advocated, or would it be next to impossible? Explain your answer in at least 5 sentences. Due Thursday, January 5th, at 10 pm.
For the "Fall of the House of Usher," imagine making a film out of this story. Choose suitable actors for each of the major roles, adding extra characters and scenes to make it more interesting if necessary. Make sure you explain why you chose certain actors for each part, and why you added in extra scenes (if you felt the need to). Due Friday, December 2nd, at 10 pm.
In class, we have already discussed the fact that Washington Irving... "Americanized" German folktales. With this knowledge, and having read "The Devil and Tom Walker," answer the following questions:
1. Who was Faust (in terms of literature!)? 2. Furthermore, explain how Tom Walker did in fact make a Faustian bargain in the story. 3. Finally, do you think the short story has any themes for modern day? Explain. Questions due at the conclusion of the short story---Thursday, November 10th, at 10 pm. We are about to read The General History of Virginia by John Smith, With that in mind, let's do some research. What are the main mistakes that the Virginia colonists made? For example, mistakes about provisions, self-defense, and self-governance are items you could talk about. Write a paragraph explaining your answer.
